But when he enters the mysterious village of Whetchilowe Cleave, he steps into a nightmarish world far beyond his wildest imaginings. For unbeknownst to him, Jake harbours a sinister secret branding him an unwelcome outsider and heretic, and implicating him in a dreadful crime committed centuries before his birth.

Encircled by an assortment of enemies all desperate to make his existence as miserable and as short as possible, Jake must dig deep, drawing upon hitherto unknown reserves of courage, wit, and cunning to overcome his dire situation. And with the help of some unlikely wretches, he must find the strength to lead them all to freedom. But if he fails, they will all share the same dreadful demise.

And if all this wasn't bad enough, Jake still has to go to school everyday.

Good read for children and adults

I love the ebook - the story is exhilarating and dark about generational vengeance which I feel reflects a lot on what's happening in certain regions of the world.

Lots of twists

This was a really enjoyable read. There’s plenty of humour but also some very serious threads - trust, loyalty, friendship. Well worth the read. I think teens and preteens will like this a lot.

Fascinating tale

This book was great fun. There’s so much to enjoy and plenty of humour. But there are some serious topics, such as trust and friendship, all handled in a clever but lighthearted manner. The characters are well drawn, especially the protagonist, Jake. Trust me, if you ever thought your life was tough you definitely need to compare it with Jake’s. Have to mention the maid, Sylvia, I absolutely loved her nastiness, one of the most intriguing characters I’ve encountered in a long time. What a cool gal.

There are plenty of twists and turns, and I found the ending very satisfying. Definitely recommended.
